Smithland is a tiny farming community of 137 people in western Iowa's Woodbury County, about 25 miles northwest of Sioux City via US-75 and Highway 141. The town sits in rolling agricultural country near the Missouri River valley, surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Most traffic consists of short local trips, though Highway 141 provides a direct route to Nebraska. The old Chicago and North Western Railway corridor still cuts visibly through the surrounding farmland.
