Smithfield, the Johnston County seat, sits 30 miles southeast of Raleigh along US Highway 70. I-95 runs just east of town with exits at 95 and 90 providing easy access. Most visitors drive from Raleigh in 45 minutes via US 70 East. The Ava Gardner Museum downtown honors the Hollywood star born on a nearby tobacco farm in 1922.
