Smith Valley is a small farming community in western Nevada's high desert, sitting between mountain ranges at nearly 5,000 feet elevation. Access is primarily via State Route 208 from US 395, about 45 miles south of Reno or 35 miles from Carson City. The area experiences typical high desert weather with hot summers and snowy winters. The valley houses one of Nevada's oldest continuously operating post offices, dating to 1862.
