Sitka sits on an island in southeastern Alaska with no road access to the mainland. Visitors arrive by ferry or fly into Rocky Gutierrez Airport, 7 miles from downtown. The compact road system centers on Halibut Point Road, which runs north along the coast for about 7 miles. Most local trips involve short drives to the ferry terminal, airport, or recreation areas. The onion-domed St. Michael's Cathedral has dominated downtown since 1848.
