Simmesport is a small river town in central Louisiana, about 45 miles northwest of Baton Rouge along the Atchafalaya River. Most visitors arrive via Louisiana Highway 1 from I-10 near Krotz Springs or from Alexandria via US-71. The town sits at the Old River Control Structure, a massive flood control system completed in 1963 that prevents the Mississippi River from permanently jumping into the Atchafalaya Basin.
