Silverton perches at 9,318 feet in Colorado's San Juan Mountains, making it one of America's highest towns. This old mining community of 637 people sits in a dramatic alpine valley surrounded by towering peaks. The only year-round road access is the famous Million Dollar Highway (US 550), a winding 48-mile drive north from Durango or south from Ouray that's considered one of the country's most scenic routes. The town anchors the northern end of the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
