Silver Bay is a small Lake Superior town about an hour northeast of Duluth on scenic Highway 61. Originally built around taconite mining in the 1950s, it sits where the Sawtooth Mountains meet the lake's dramatic coastline. The town serves as a supply stop for North Shore travelers and a gateway to wilderness areas via Highway 1. Its most notable feature is the massive man-made harbor, blasted from solid rock to load ore boats.
