Shorter is a small rural town in central Alabama, about 20 miles east of Tuskegee via US Highway 80. With just over 400 residents, it sits in the rolling countryside of Macon County's Black Belt region. The town serves as a quiet stop along US 80, which connects Montgomery to the Georgia border. Named after Civil War-era Alabama Governor John Gill Shorter, it's one of the few places in the state honoring that particular Confederate leader.
