Shelly is a tiny farming town in northwestern Minnesota's Red River Valley, about 15 miles from Ada via Highway 9. The main route from Minneapolis runs 240 miles through Detroit Lakes, while locals make quick trips to Ada for county business. The area's famous for rich black soil that grows sugar beets and soybeans across endless flat prairie. The community still operates one of Minnesota's last single-room schoolhouses.
