Shell Lake is a small Wisconsin town of 1,500 people surrounded by forests and lakes in the northwestern part of the state. Highway 63 runs north-south through town, connecting to Spooner 15 miles south and continuing toward Minnesota. Highway 48 provides east-west access to Rice Lake and Washburn. The restored 1920s Shell Lake Arts Center downtown hosts community theater in a former movie palace.
