Sheffield anchors Alabama's Shoals region along the Tennessee River, connected by US 72 east-west and US 43 north-south. The area's flat river valley terrain experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters. Most visitors arrive via routes from Birmingham (120 miles), Nashville, or the regional airport 15 miles west. Sheffield is the birthplace of Sam Phillips, the Sun Records founder who discovered Elvis Presley.
