Shannon is a small farming town in northwestern Illinois, reachable via US Route 52 about 15 miles southeast of Freeport. Most visitors drive from Chicago via I-90 west to Rockford, then US 20 west to Freeport and US 52 south. The town sits amid typical prairie farmland with corn and soybean fields. Shannon's historic grain elevator, visible for miles across the flat countryside, has been a highway landmark since the early 1900s.
