Shamokin is a small coal region town in central Pennsylvania, about 50 miles north of Harrisburg in the Appalachian foothills. Route 61 is the main north-south artery through town, while Route 54 provides east-west access. Most visitors arrive via I-80 to Route 61 south, and the mountainous terrain means winding roads with steep grades. The town sits above extensive underground coal fires that have been burning for decades.
