Sentinel Butte is a tiny western North Dakota town of 57 people perched on high ground above the Little Missouri River valley. Reach it via Highway 85, about 30 miles north of Belfield or 45 miles south of Williston. The town sits amid classic badlands terrain between the Bakken oil fields and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It's named for the distinctive 400-foot butte that towers over the surrounding prairie like a natural watchtower.
