Selma lies along the Alabama River about 50 miles west of Montgomery via US Highway 80. Most visitors arrive from Montgomery on Historic Highway 80 or from Birmingham via I-65 south to Highway 80 west. The city serves as Dallas County's seat and connects to surrounding communities through Highway 22 and local routes. The Edmund Pettus Bridge spans the Alabama River and remains the city's most famous landmark from the 1965 civil rights marches.
