Scio is a small timber town of 930 people nestled in the Cascade foothills about 20 miles east of Salem via Highway 226. The scenic route passes through farmland before entering forested hills, making it popular with Salem commuters seeking rural living. From Portland, take I-5 south to Salem, then Highway 22 east briefly to connect with Highway 226. The town sits in a valley surrounded by Douglas fir forests, with wet winters and dry summers. Scio's annual Lamb and Wool Fair in June has been celebrating rural life since 1958.
