Sawmills is a small foothills city about 15 miles southwest of Hickory, reached primarily via US Highway 321 south from the Interstate 40 corridor. The town of 5,000 sits where the Piedmont rises toward the Blue Ridge Mountains, with NC Highway 16 providing east-west connections to Conover and Newton. Hickory Regional Airport lies 18 miles northeast for air travelers. The city gets its name from the lumber mills that once lined the South Fork Catawba River during the early 1900s logging era.
