Savoonga is a remote Siberian Yupik village on St. Lawrence Island, accessible only by small plane to the local airport or seasonal boat. No roads connect it to mainland Alaska. Within the village, residents use ATVs in summer and snowmobiles in winter on gravel roads that span less than two square miles. The Bering Sea location brings harsh winters with sea ice lasting November through June, isolating the community except for emergency flights. Savoonga houses Alaska's largest walrus ivory carving cooperative.
