Sanford sits in central North Carolina's Sandhills region, about 40 miles southwest of Raleigh at the intersection of US Highway 1 and US 421. The city connects north to the Research Triangle via US 1 and west to I-85 through NC 87. Popular routes include US 1 south to Pinehurst's golf resorts and US 421 east-west between Greensboro and the coast. The 1930 Carolina Theatre downtown still operates with its original Art Deco marquee intact.
