Saltaire is a tiny car-free village on Fire Island, reachable only by ferry from Sayville on the Long Island mainland. Take I-495 or Southern State to Route 27, then local roads to the ferry terminal. The 25-minute ferry ride crosses Great South Bay to this Victorian summer community of boardwalks and beach cottages. It's one of the few incorporated U.S. villages that completely bans motor vehicles.
