Salida sits in Colorado's Arkansas River Valley at 7,036 feet, surrounded by towering peaks of the Sawatch and Sangre de Cristo ranges. US Highway 50 runs right through town, connecting to Pueblo eastbound and Gunnison via Monarch Pass westbound, while Highway 291 heads north to Buena Vista. Most visitors arrive from Denver via US 285 south or from Colorado Springs on US 50 west through the Arkansas River canyon. The historic downtown boasts Colorado's largest collection of 1880s railroad-era buildings on the National Register.
