Salem is a small county seat in southeastern South Dakota, about 45 minutes southwest of Sioux Falls via Highway 38 or through Mitchell on Highway 81. The town of 1,200 sits amid rolling farmland typical of the region. Most visitors arrive from Interstate 90 near Mitchell, taking Highway 81 north. The 1912 courthouse with its prominent clock tower serves as the town's most recognizable landmark.
