Salem is a tiny mountain community of 177 people in South Carolina's Blue Ridge foothills. Take Highway 11 (Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway) from I-85 near Anderson, about 30 miles east, or continue west toward North Carolina. Route 130 runs north-south through town. The area offers winding mountain roads popular with tourists heading to the Blue Ridge. Salem is the birthplace of Strom Thurmond, who holds the Senate record for longest individual filibuster.
