Salem is a small Delaware River town in southwestern New Jersey, about 40 miles from Philadelphia. Route 49 runs right through downtown, connecting to I-95 via Route 322 from Philly or Route 40 from the north. The Delaware Memorial Bridge on I-295 provides access from Delaware. Most traffic comes from the surrounding farm communities within 30 miles. The town's centerpiece is a 300-year-old Salem Oak tree on the courthouse square that witnessed colonial treaty negotiations.
