The area sits at 4,700 feet elevation between the Sierra Nevada and Pine Nut Mountains, with Route 88 providing western access toward Lake Tahoe. Most traffic involves commuters to Carson City or Reno, plus through-travelers on the 395 corridor. The community bears the name of German ranching settlers from the 1800s cattle era.
