Rolla is a small farming town of about 1,000 people in north-central North Dakota, just 15 miles from Canada. Highway 5 runs through town, connecting to Highway 2 for access to Grand Forks (120 miles east) and Minot (100 miles southwest via Rugby). The area experiences typical northern plains weather with harsh winters and mild summers. The town sits 13 miles south of the International Peace Garden, a 2,300-acre botanical preserve on the US-Canada border.
