Rivers is a tiny community of 48 people in New Mexico's remote Catron County high desert. Reach it via US 60 west from Socorro, then State Road 12 south for about 30 miles through mountain terrain at 6,800 feet elevation. The nearest town is Reserve, 25 miles south. Winter snow can close mountain passes, and services are extremely limited. Original railroad buildings from the defunct Arizona and New Mexico Railway still line the old tracks.
