Rice Lake is a small city in northeastern Minnesota, about 20 miles northwest of Duluth via Highway 4. Most visitors drive up from Duluth International Airport in about 30 minutes, connecting through Interstate 35 for longer trips from Minneapolis or Wisconsin. The community of 4,100 sits in classic Iron Range country with dense forests and wetlands. It's named for the wild rice beds that once flourished in the area's shallow lakes, providing food for Ojibwe communities long before European settlers arrived.
