Rhinelander is the gateway to Wisconsin's Northwoods, sitting where the Wisconsin River starts its journey south. Highway 8 runs east-west through town while Highway 17 provides the main north-south connection to Eagle River and Stevens Point. From Milwaukee, take I-94 west to Highway 29 north, then Highway 17 north for the 240-mile drive. The Rhinelander Oneida County Airport sits three miles south of downtown. The city is famous for the Hodag, a mythical swamp creature that became the town's beloved mascot.
