Red River perches at 8,750 feet in New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Mountains, accessible via scenic State Road 38 from Questa. Most visitors drive 38 miles north from Taos through Questa, while longer routes from Santa Fe (100 miles) or Albuquerque follow US-285 and US-64. The former mining town turned ski resort sits in Carson National Forest with heavy winter snowfall and cool summers. Main Street literally ends at the base of the ski mountain.
