Ravenel is a small Lowcountry town 20 miles southwest of Charleston via US Highway 17. The scenic coastal route connects directly to Charleston and continues toward Savannah. State Route 162 heads inland from Highway 17. Most visitors fly into Charleston International Airport, about 35 miles away, then drive the coastal corridor. The town was named after the historic Ravenel family, who operated major rice plantations here in the 1700s and 1800s.
