Ransom is a tiny farming community of 245 people in LaSalle County, about 70 miles southwest of Chicago. Most visitors arrive via I-80, exiting at Morris and heading south through corn and soybean country. Route 47 provides the main north-south connection to Morris and the Chicago area. The town's post office has operated continuously since 1882 in the same modest building.
