This small Iowa farming town sits along Highway 9 in Howard County, about 12 miles west of Cresco and 25 miles northeast of Decorah. Most visitors arrive via US Highway 52 from Dubuque or Rochester, then take Highway 9. The surrounding Driftless Area features rolling farmland that escaped glacial flattening. Protivin operates one of Iowa's smallest post offices, which doubles as the community center.
