Progreso is a small agricultural city in the Rio Grande Valley, 15 miles from the Mexican border and 20 miles south of McAllen via US Highway 281. The main route connects through US 281 north to McAllen-Miller International Airport in about 25 minutes, while State Highway 186 provides east-west access to Weslaco and Mercedes. The city's water tower features a unique mural with both Texas and Mexican flags, symbolizing the area's strong cross-border cultural ties.
