Portis is a small farming town in north-central Kansas along US Highway 24, about 20 miles west of Osborne. The area features typical Great Plains wheat country with rolling prairie stretching in all directions. Most traffic arrives on US 24, which connects to Interstate 70 near Hays about 50 miles south. The town's historic grain elevator serves as a prairie landmark visible for miles.
