Portage sits where two rivers nearly meet in south-central Wisconsin, creating a historic crossroads that Native Americans and early explorers used to travel between waterways. Interstate 39 and US 51 run north-south through town, connecting to Madison 40 miles south and Stevens Point 60 miles north, while Highway 33 heads east to Wisconsin Dells. The city preserves the Zona Gale House, former home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author who captured small-town Wisconsin life.
