Portage is a small Pennsylvania mountain town of 2,500 people, built around the historic railroad that once carried canal boats over the Alleghenies. US Route 22 runs right through town, connecting Pittsburgh (70 miles west) to Altoona and points east, while State Route 53 handles north-south traffic to nearby communities. The area gets real winters with snow and pleasant summers in the highlands. The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site still shows where they used to haul entire canal boats up steep inclined planes to cross the mountains.
