Poplar sits along Highway 2 in northeastern Montana, about 25 miles from the North Dakota border. The town serves Fort Peck Indian Reservation and connects Williston (60 miles east) with Wolf Point (30 miles west). Most long-distance visitors arrive from Billings via Highway 191 north or from Great Falls via Highway 87 to Havre. The historic Great Northern Railway depot still stands downtown, marking where the railroad first brought settlers to this remote Hi-Line community.
