Pontoosuc is a tiny farming community of about 100 people in western Illinois, reached via Route 96 from US 136 or from Fort Madison, Iowa. The town sits on prairie bluffs above the Mississippi River valley, surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Its historic wooden grain elevator from the 1870s remains a rare surviving example of 19th-century agricultural architecture.
