Pleasanton lies in the Tri-Valley about 25 miles southeast of San Francisco, connected by Interstate 680 running north-south through town and I-580 along the southern edge. The Mediterranean climate means comfortable driving year-round through rolling hills at 350-foot elevation. Local routes include Hacienda Drive through the business district and Santa Rita Road for residential areas, while Highway 84 provides a scenic route west to the peninsula. The city hosts California's massive Alameda County Fair each summer at the Bernal Avenue fairgrounds.
