Plains sits about 10 miles west of Americus on US 280 in rural southwest Georgia. This farming town of 750 people occupies flat peanut country in the coastal plain. Most visitors take US 280 from Americus or drive about 45 miles west from Cordele via I-75. Plains is famous as Jimmy Carter's hometown, where his family's peanut warehouse still stands.
