Pittsfield anchors western Massachusetts as the Berkshire County seat, nestled in a valley surrounded by the Berkshire Hills. Major routes include US-20 running east-west through downtown (connecting Springfield and Albany), Route 7 providing north-south access to Vermont and Connecticut, and Route 8 leading to North Adams. The Massachusetts Turnpike lies 10 miles south via Route 20. The Berkshire Museum downtown displays a 40-foot sperm whale skeleton that's been amazing visitors since 1903.
