Pinetops is a small town of 1,400 people in eastern North Carolina, about 60 miles northeast of Raleigh. US Highway 64 runs east-west through town, connecting to Rocky Mount and the Triangle area, while State Route 42 provides north-south access to Tarboro. The town sits in pine forest and farmland typical of the coastal plain region. A historic early 1900s railroad depot still stands downtown, reflecting Pinetops' origins as an Atlantic Coast Line railway stop.
