Penitas is a small Rio Grande Valley city about 15 miles west of McAllen on US Highway 83. With around 6,400 residents, it sits in flat subtropical terrain where hot summers give way to mild winters. US 83 provides the main access from McAllen and connects to Interstate 2 for longer trips from San Antonio or Houston. McAllen Miller International Airport is about 20 miles east. The city is home to Panadería San Miguel, an authentic Mexican bakery that's been family-operated for over 30 years.
