Paynesville is a tiny Pike County community of 64 people about 80 miles northwest of St. Louis. Take I-70 west to Highway 61 north through Bowling Green, then follow county roads. It's farm country along the Mississippi River bottomlands where Missouri's first commercial salt works operated in the 1800s.
