Pawnee is a small Illinois city of 2,700 people located 20 miles southeast of Springfield via Route 104. The town sits at the intersection of several rural highways in Sangamon County's farm country, making it a natural waypoint for travelers crossing central Illinois. Most visitors arrive on Route 104 from Springfield or Route 29 from the north, often as an alternative to Interstate 55. The historic grain elevator, visible for miles across the prairie, has served as a landmark since the 1920s.
