Paterson sits 20 miles west of Manhattan along Interstate 80, the main route connecting to NYC via the George Washington Bridge. Route 19 runs north-south through downtown, linking to Route 4 and regional highways. The city straddles the Passaic River in hilly terrain, with the spectacular 77-foot Great Falls cascading right through downtown. Once known as "Silk City," Paterson's historic mills now house artists' studios and lofts.
