Park Rapids anchors Minnesota's lake country as Hubbard County's seat, sitting where forests meet farmland in the north-central part of the state. Highway 34 runs east-west through town, connecting to Brainerd 45 miles east, while Highway 71 provides north-south access to Bemidji and Interstate 94. Most visitors come from the Twin Cities area via Highway 10 and 34, drawn by the numerous lakes and resorts. The city serves as the southern starting point for the 49-mile Heartland Trail, a paved recreational path following an old railroad grade north to Walker.
