Palo Blanco is a tiny South Texas community of about 300 people in Starr County, an hour west of McAllen via US Highway 83. The town sits in flat Rio Grande Valley brushland where summer heat regularly tops 100°F. Reach it from San Antonio by taking US 281 south to US 83 west. The community gets its name from distinctive white-barked palo blanco trees that still line some residential streets.
