Palmyra is a small county seat in northeast Missouri, about 20 miles inland from the Mississippi River. Most visitors arrive on US Highway 61 from Hannibal to the southeast or continue south from Iowa. The route from St. Louis runs about 100 miles via I-70 west to Highway 61 north. The town centers around a courthouse square dominated by an 1858 brick courthouse with a distinctive white cupola.
